Everything
Mac builds is built to last for 30-35 years and with proper
maintenance - look good doing it! He offers
a 5 year warranty on everything he builds, which covers any problem
with the structure itself. (He doesn't cover natural weathering
or splinters though! Once he builds it, it's up to you to take
care of it!) A good semi-transparent stain (Cabot SPF, for example)
will last you two to three years between stainings. Give your
deck a good cleaning with a pressure washer once a year (don't
get too close with the tip, you'll rip out the softer wood),
stain it every 2-3 years and it will look good for decades!
Substructure -
Unless specified as redwood or cedar, all structural wood is
pressure treated fir. All cut ends are coated in a preservative
to maintain the highest degree of protection against the elements.
Joist bays are blocked over beams to strengthen the entire structure
and curved corners are solidly supported.
Fasteners -
All fasteners used are either double-hot dipped galvanized, coated
or stainless steel. With the new chemicals used to treat
pressure treated wood, any other fastener will fail long
before the wood does. In addition, Mac notches many of his wood
to wood connections to create a better, stronger connection than
relying on metal fasteners alone.
Decking -
Tight knot cedar, construction heart redwood and composite & plastic
boards from TimberTech are the most common decking materials
Mac uses. He uses coated
screws
for cedar and redwood and hidden fastening systems designed specifically
for composite materials.
Attention
to Detail -
Deck edges are routed with a roundover bit to create a
softer edge, mechanical fasteners can be
hidden either behind plugs or
creative placement, mill marks are sanded
off, fasteners are set with a template to ensure perfectly
straight rows,
fascia is used to hide the pressure treated
substructure, curves are incorporated where appropriate to
personalize your deck and make it stand
out!
Communication
with Clients -
If you don't reach him right away, Mac WILL call you back! Few
things are more frustrating than trying to track down a contractor
who's got a big chunk of your money and suddenly becomes unavailable.
That problem won't happen with Mac for two reasons. First, all
contracts are written with a fair payment schedule. You'll
make payments
as the
project
progresses,
not everything
up front! Second, he answers his phone from 7 am - 8 pm. However,
when saws are running, phones aren't loud enough! Just
leave a message
and
he
will get
back
to you
within
an hour
or two.
